You are invited to arrive on the afternoon/evening of March 6th, as activities will commence on March 7th and go through the weekend.

Anzan Atitlán and Secular Sabbath come together on a profound journey, bound by a shared mission to rekindle the ancient wisdom of Mayan culture and to nurture the arts, traditions, and communal spirit that is on the brink of fading in the modern world. This partnership embodies a deep commitment to not only preserving but actively revitalizing the rich cultural heritage of one of the world's oldest civilizations, ensuring its continuation for generations to come.

The event will bring together the Secular Sabbath format into the beautiful grounds of Anzan Atitlán, an artist residency.

It is our pleasure to present an opportunity of a lifetime to join us in Guatemala on Lake Atitlán for the first time. Our Secular Sabbath crew is collaborating with the local community through Anzan Atitlán to best meld our offerings with the stunning landscape and culture inherent to Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.

We will be bringing Rhye, Joseph August, Anita Vasan, and Deborah Anne Medow to share in music, yoga, yoga nidra, Esalen massage, and floating sound baths in the lake. We will adventure with Anzan Atitlán into the local community offerings. Our days will offer a choose-your-own-adventure of:

  1. Natural Dye Workshop + Backstrap Weaving: Immerse ourselves in the centuries old textile practices of local indigenous communities 4 hour workshop. Could also do Maguey Handbags - These take months to make so would be more of a demo/ talk of history, produce a mini purse + then everyone can get one that we can order ahead of time as a part of people's Secular Sabbath kit for the weekend. See what they look like here.

  2. Cacao ceremony with Shaman: The Cacao Ceremony is an ancient tradition practiced by the Maya, using cacao pods from the Pacific coast of Guatemala, prepared as a drink. Shaman or fire ceremony requires a minimum of three hours. For a less formal experience, we can prepare a simpler and shorter cacao ceremony.

  3. Nahual/Mayan Horoscope: Local practitioner will lead either individual or group reading sessions. Learn more here

  4. Guatemalan tortilla making / cooking class - Short cooking class using everything from the garden, cook over open fire and then all eat together

  5. Cold plunge bathtub

  6. Sauna with jump to the lake

  7. Optional onsite activities:  swimming, kayaking, yoga, sunset hike at nearby iconic Indian Head mountain where you can see the famous mountain that inspired Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's book The Little Prince.

In the evenings, we will share music.
